Unity Spiritual Movies: The Great Debaters
Friday, September 10th, 7:00 p.m.
Out to Lunch, September 19th Immediately following service
On the third Sunday each month, we’re inviting all who wish to join us, to go to a
restaurant for brunch/lunch so that we can extend our get-acquainted and sharing
time.
Early in the service our platform assistant will ask any who wish to go that day to raise
their hands so we can get a count. Our luncheon coordinator, Meg McClelland or her
designee, will call the restaurant to tell them how many to expect and our anticipated
arrival. We will “prequalify” the restaurant for good food, economic prices, and space
availability.
Please plan to join us for a relaxing, fun time together. We shall continue our potluck
lunches on the first Sunday of each month also.

Back for early Fall and great weather! (Again, our apologies for the weather-related cancellation in January.)
Denzel Washington directs this drama based on the true story of professor Melvin B. Tol-son. In 1935, he inspired students to form the school's first debate team, which went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship.
The team consists of three very smart and aggressive students whose dreams of success are fueled by Tolson's energy and idealism. (Spirituality & Practice) But outside the class-room, they face a world of huge and hurtful racial bigotry. One of Tolson's slogans is "We do what we have to do so we can do what we want to do." Very few movies honor the unstinting determination it takes to succeed in a competitive world. The Great Debaters does that and much more.
This movie offers steadfast humanity, literacy, passionate belief in education, faith that history teaches invaluable lessons and strong, emotionally grounded performances (New York Times).
A film NOT to be missed. The evening begins with a brief introduction of the film, including spiritual themes; meditation; and then the viewing of the film in full. Afterwards, there is collaborative discussion of spiritual and psychological themes. See you at the movies!
Fall Equinox Celebration
Wednesday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m.
This is a time for being grateful for what we have harvested, preparing
for the coming cool darkness, and balancing, since night and day are
(almost) equal. Things to think about: what am I grateful for; what
does the coming dark time mean to me; what does the concept of
balance look like in our lives? Traditionally, the winter is a time for
rest and reflection. But some people are energized then, how about
you? Bring writing materials and a snack to share. Traditional foods
are breads, nuts, apples, pomegranates, and root vegetables, but
anything goes. Colors are red, orange, russet, maroon, brown, and gold.
