Ohio, and traveled out west shortly after the Civil War ended. In a time when
travel over the plains was risky and none too comfortable, she set out by
herself.
She settled in Clinton, Missouri for a time and opened a school. All was well
for a time, but due to her health she was advised to relocate further west. She
then moved to a small town in Texas. Here her love of literature and nature
caused her to cross paths with a very young Charles Fillmore (he was 23 at
the time and she was 32).
Mary Caroline Paige was a
woman ahead of her time.
Born 8/6/1845 in Paigetown,
Ohio, to a rather large family
of several children. She was
fortunate in that she received
a college education and
became a teacher. She left
